14 Ways to Make the Most of Your Marketing Internship
The saying “you only get out what you put in” is cliché for a reason—it’s usually true. Making the most out of opportunities the best way to set yourself up for success, especially in professional settings.
That’s true when it comes to marketing internships.
Too many interns take the easy way out and settle in to a routine of copy machine bouts and morning coffee runs.
But, by not seeking more, you’re selling yourself short and squandering an awesome chance to grow personally and professionally. That lack of effort isn’t going to get it at a Philadelphia marketing agency internship or any other on-the-job learning opportunity.
Translation: An unfulfilling internship can be just as much your fault as the company that hired you. Better experiences require digging deeper. Even the most dedicated students will only get a handful of internships. Here are a bunch of ideas on making each one worth it.
1. Arrive early.
Give yourself more time to prepare, organize, network and get to work.
2. Try to connect with each coworker.
Relationships matter. You never know what you’ll have in common with someone who could help shape your career.
3. Think proactively.
Anticipate needs and think ahead. You’ll end up saving your coworkers time and energy.
4. Schedule one-on-one meetings.
Learn as much as you can about the company and the jobs people do there. Informational interviews are a great way to learn and get constructive criticism, feedback and advice.
5. Connect with other interns.
Get to know your peers. Ask questions, go to lunch, and seek out excuses to collaborate.
6. Ask a lot of questions and be curious.

7. Take notes.
Write down the projects you’ve worked on so you can build a great portfolio to take with you.
8. Try to learn something new each day.

You’re surrounded by successful professionals. Take advantage of that and let them help you craft a unique and compelling resume.
10. Be yourself.
Let your personality shine through and add some of your uniqueness to the company!

The only way to get good at something is to just do it! Everybody is a beginner at some point. Have confidence in your current role and where you want to go.
Make sure you’re on the same page as anyone you’re working with on projects. Offer updates on your progress and direction often.
