Elmo Checks In on Twitter/X

Elmo’s thinking about you.

Everyone’s favorite red monster recently tweeted:

“Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”

More than 210 million views later, it’s safe to say the post struck a chord – and some people aren’t doing great.

Elmo was trending on Twitter/X, and the post garnered responses and coverage from the BBC to the Today Show.

For its part, Sesame Street’s social media probably didn’t expect the simple tweet to draw the response it did (though the simple question has real power). But the team made the most of the moment with a response that was on-brand and beneficial.

The organization leveraged the social presences of other Sesame Street characters like Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, and the Sesame Street account posted emotional wellbeing resources for grownups.

Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you.❤️ #EmotionalWellBeing pic.twitter.com/jhn2LNKfHf

Elmo’s World

Countless brands and personalities leveraged the moment to add their voice to Elmo’s moment. Joe Biden shared a supportive response. Larry David attacked Elmo on the Today Show.

Elmo’s tweet captured the best parts of social media with a post that caught the spirit of the moment without being overly complex or controversial. The simple question was right in line with Elmo’s brand, resonated with readers and begged for engagement and follow-up.

Long Story Short

Good social content isn’t always about pushing a product or a perspective. Sometimes it’s about starting or joining a conversation that has meaning.
