Marketing ‘Down the Shore’

If you live in the Philadelphia region, chances are you don’t go to the beach.

You go “down the shore.”

The phrase has become local shorthand for a trip to a beachfront town, primarily in New Jersey.

Where did “down the shore” come from?

Billy Penn published a deep dive a few years ago that’s well worth a read.

It details early uses of the term, including a 1951 Philadelphia Inquirer ad, as well as its appearances in popular culture over the years, from a Tom Waits song to movie and TV references.

The article points out that “down the shore” encompasses visiting any of the towns that make up the Jersey Shore, keeping the definition of “the beach” to mean the actual coastline with sand and waves.

A Shore Thing

“Down the shore” is uncommon enough to give people unfamiliar with the term pause. Someone from outside the area might even assume it’s a mistake and correct it.

That itself would be a mistake.

For those familiar, the phrase lends instant credibility to people (or businesses) who use it. Locals don’t need the term explained. Visitors do.

That distinction is key for any communications pros seeking authenticity with their audience.

The greater Philadelphia region has its fair share of local phrases and expressions, as evidenced by shows like Task and Mare of Easttown. But every community and audience has its own versions of “down the shore” and “jawn.”

And they’re not always static. A recent New York Times piece explores how the borough’s name originated and how usage may be evolving from “the Bronx” to simply “Bronx.” Perhaps a few years from now, anyone saying “the Bronx” will come across as an outsider.

Long Story Short

Every audience has its “down the shore.” It can be industry jargon, an acronym, or a nickname. Getting those terms right signals credibility.
